COLORADO SPRINGS - The Badgers of Snow College (Utah) held on to the No. 1 post in the NJCAA / JC Football.com Poll released today. They take the top spot for the second consecutive week. Snow improved to 5-0 on the season with a 48-17 thumping of previously No. 12 ranked Mesa Community College on Sept. 29.
The Badgers received 103 total votes and five of seven first place votes to hold the No. 1 ranking. Butler Community College (Kan.) is again at No. 2 with 98 total votes and one first place vote. The Grizzlies are also 5-0 as they defeated Air Force Prep 37-7 on Sept. 29.
Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College stays at No. 3 in the poll and received a first place vote, while Eastern Arizona College stays at No. 4. Jones County Junior College (Miss.) moves up two spots this week to No. 5.
Snow won their eighth-consecutive contest, dating back to the 2006 season, behind a strong rushing performance from Soni Sotele. He amassed 150 rushing yards on 24 carries and one touchdown. The Badgers were without their starting signal caller, Jon Eastman, who suffered a broken bone in his foot earlier in the week. His backup, Houston Erbstoesser, produced magnificently throwing for 192 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed for another score.
The game was never really in question for Snow as their NJCAA-leading defense held Mesa to a field goal in the first half and two touchdowns, limiting the Thunderbirds to 221 yards. The loss dropped Mesa to No. 17 in this week's rankings.
Snow will next face Phoenix College (Ariz., 1-3) at home on Oct. 6th.
For Butler it was more of the same: defense, defense, and more defense. The Grizzlies shut-out Air Force Prep in the first half and then surrendered a touchdown in the third quarter - the only points allowed by Butler in 15 quarters of play. This season, the Grizzly `D' has given up just 36 points in five games (7.2 per game).
Offensively, the Grizzlies racked up 222 rushing yards, of which 178 came from Beau Johnson on 23 carries. Johnson also scored his seventh touchdown of the season. Tywon Hubbard gained just 23 rushing yards, but scored twice on runs of three and 11 yards.
Next Saturday, Butler will hit the road to face long-time rival Coffeyville Community College (Kan., 3-2), which is 20th in this week's rankings.
Mississippi Gulf Coast improved to 5-0 on the season with a 37-3 dominating victory over Copiah-Lincoln Community College (Miss.) on Sept. 27. The Bulldogs are 3-0 in the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) and atop the South Division standings.
Special teams played a big role in the win for the Bulldogs. Kicker Sean Brauchle showed Co-Lin why he was named back-to-back MACJC special teams player of the week as he hit three field goals, including a boot from 50 yards.
MGCCC did not get off to a great start as they failed to score in the first quarter. However, the Bulldogs scored 17 in the second quarter to take a 17- 3 halftime lead.
The Bulldogs got a big game from running back Demond Washington who had a 69- yard touchdown run and a 72-yard punt return for a score.
The win was the fourth on the road for the Bulldogs. They next host East Central Community College (Miss., 2-3) on Oct. 4.
Eastern Arizona is the only team in the poll that boasts six wins. The Gila Monsters won their sixth-straight on Sept. 29 with a 41-7 thumping of Arizona Western College. Their 6-0 record is the best start to a season at EAC since 1955.
The Gila Monsters racked up 372 rushing yards in the win over Arizona Western on 63 running plays. Quarterback Pat Riley was again superb in leading the option attack. Riley was the leading rusher for the Gila Monsters with 121 yards on 15 carries and one touchdown. To no surprise, Eastern Arizona 's rushing offense ranks second in the NJCAA, producing 329.8 yards per game.
The Gila Monsters host New Mexico Military Institute (1-4) in their next contest on Oct. 6.
With Lackawanna College (Pa.) suffering their first loss of the season (33- 21 to Nassau Community College, N.Y. ), the door opened for Jones County Junior College (Miss.) to crack into the top five. Jones picked up their fifth win of the season in dramatic fashion.
Trailing 38-28 late in the third quarter, the Bobcats stuffed the Hinds Community College Eagles on a fourth down and inches. Jones would then march 85 yards in 10 plays with Jasper Ducksworth going over the pile from 3 yards out to end the drive. A good PAT made it 38-35 with 1:09 left in the third quarter, which propelled the Bobcats to 56-41 MACJC South Division victory.
JCJC will next face Southwest Mississippi Community College (2-3) on Oct. 4.
Making a big splash in the poll this week is Kilgore College (Texas) at No. 8. The Rangers are 4-1 and sit atop the Southwest Junior College Football Conference. They knocked off defending national champ Blinn College (Texas) from their No. 1 ranking on Sept. 22 with a 40-39 win. Their lone loss of the season was a 29-28 nail-bitter on Aug. 25 at Butler Community College (Kan.). The Rangers recently defeated Arkansas Baptist College 38-13 and next face Tyler Junior College on Oct. 6.

The Eastern Arizona College basketball team dropped a heart breaker at home Saturday night as they fell to Arizona Western 60-58.

The second half saw Western push to a six point advantage eight minutes in at 38-32 only to see EAC tie the game again at 40 apiece. EAC took a brief lead at 44-43 but it was their only one of the second half. With two minutes remaining Eastern trailed 56-50 but the rallied and had a chance to tie the game with 16 seconds left but missed the second of two free throws. AWC then missed the second of two at the other end giving Eastern the ball back with 12 seconds left trailing 60-58. The Eastern Arizona College basketball team needed overtime Wednesday night before coming away with a 77-74 victory over Mesa CC in Thatcher.
EAC came into the game a day after the new NJCAA poll came out with the Gila Monsters ranked 19th in the country. The first half was a see-saw affair with both teams struggling to score. With just over seven minutes to play the score was tied at 19. Eastern then went on a 13-2 run to end the half ahead 32-21. The Monster lead quickly evaporated as Mesa began the second half on a 13-2 run of their own to tie the game at 34 all. From there the lead changed hands 11 times with neither team having more than a three point advantage. With 12 seconds remaining and the score tied at 65 all Eastern had a chance to win but a Jordan Jamestown runner in the lane fell short sending the game to overtime.
After falling behind 67-66 Eastern promptly ran off the next six points to take a 72-67 lead. Mesa would not go quietly and tied the game back at 74 with just over a minute to play. Three free throws by Jamestown, the last of which coming with 3.2 seconds remaining was enough to give the Monsters the win.
EAC placed three players in double figures led by the career high 28 points for Vladimir Bulut. Marcus Palmer poured in 20 and pulled down seven rebounds and Jamestown chipped in with 11 points while grabbing six rebounds and passing out five assists. Eastern struggled from the foul line on the night connecting on only 19 of 33 attempts for 57% but fortunately converted half of their 20 three point attempts.
EAC (16-4, 11-2) will travel to face conference rival Cochise on Saturday night. Game time is set for 7:30 MST and all of the action can be heard live via the internet at www.swsn.net. For all of the latest information on Gila Monster basketball log onto www.eachoops.com.
The Gila Monsters did suffer a set back this week as they were forced to forfeit their 72-47 win over South Mountain. This was the result of a player who saw action in the games final minute and was later ruled ineligible. This drops Eastern's record to 16-4 overall and 11-2 in the ACCAC. It also takes them out of sole possession of first place and moves them into a tie with Arizona Western.
EAC's recent trend of getting off to a slow start continued again Wednesday as Glendale led much of the first half and took a 41-40 lead into the break. Eastern fell behind 48-42 to start the second half before finally coming alive going on a 17-4 run to take the lead that they would never relinquish.
EAC scored a season high 94 points and placed six players in double figures to accomplish that feat. Leading the way was sophomore point guard Jordan Jamestown who scored a game high 21 points. Jamestown also passed out six assists and pulled down six rebounds on the night. Marcus Palmer scored 17, Gabor Boros 16, Will Bynum 14, Vladimir Bulut 11 and Regan Andersen rounded out the double figure scoring with 10.
Eastern (13-3, 8-1) returns home Saturday night to face Yavapai.
Eastern fell behind again to start the game as Yavapai came out on fire shooting their way to a 18-13 advantage seven minutes into the game. Yavapai stretched the lead to 21-15 with just over 11 minutes to go before the Gila Monster defense stepped up holding Yavapai to only two points the rest of the half. The 22-2 run to end the first half gave EAC a 38-23 lead at the break. Yavapai closed the gap to eight with six minutes remaining but again Eastern finished with a flourish outscoring the Roughriders 20-8 to end the game.
Eastern placed three players in double figures on the night led by Marcus Palmer's 21 points. Vladimir Bulut added 18 on 5 of 7 from three and Gabor Boros scored 16 connecting on all four of his three point attempts. Palmer led the rebounding effort with nine and Boros passed out a team high eight assists. For the game the Monsters hit on 13 of 17 from behind the arc for 76%. The Eastern defense was huge again despite the poor start as EAC held Yavapai to on 37% shooting from the field and out rebounded the Riders 36-22.
EAC (14-3, 9-1) will play their next two on the road as they travel to Pima on Wednesday then to Chandler-Gilbert on Saturday. Game time for both is set for 7:30 MST and all of the action can be heard live via the internet at www.swsn.net. For all of the latest on Gila Monster basketball log onto www.eachoops.com.
The Eastern Arizona College basketball team traveled to Yuma Monday night to face the 8th ranked Arizona Western College Matadors and left after pulling off a 76-73 overtime win.
Eastern struggled at the beginning of the game as they found themselves down by ten only five minutes into the game. The deficit grew to as many as 11 at 32-21 with just over eight minutes to go. At the half EAC still trailed 42-35. In the second half Eastern slowly fought back finally tying the score at 53 all with nine minutes to go. A late 6-0 run gave the Monsters a brief four point lead but they were unable to hold onto as AWC forced the extra period.
In overtime, Western jumped to a quick four point advantage at 68-64. EAC then scored the next eight points capped off by Vladimir Bulut's seventh three pointer of the night with 45 seconds remaining. A dunk by Will Bynum and two free throws by Gabor Boros sealed the Gila Monster victory.
EAC was led in scoring by Vladimir Bulut's 25 points. Bulut connected on 7 of 9 three pointers on the night and 9 of 12 field goals overall. Marcus Palmer added 18 and Will Bynum chipped in with 13. Bynum also pulled down a game high 10 rebounds while Boros and Jordan Jamestown each passed out five assists. The difference in the game was again the Gila Monster defense. Though they struggled in the first half the defense held Western to only 28% shooting in the second half and for the game out rebounded them 42-26.
EAC (12-3, 7-1) takes over sole possession of first place in the ACCAC with the win. There is no rest for the Monsters as they must turn around on Wednesday and travel to take on Glendale.

The Eastern Arizona College football team chalked up another victory Saturday night against Phoenix College. The 30-6 win for the Monsters may look like a lopsided game but those that saw the game know it wasn't. The Monsters struck first when freshman quarterback Jawaun Luckey called his own number from 9 yards out. The point after attempt never got off the ground and Eastern held a 6-0 lead.
Phoenix College answered with an 11 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Josh Schlueter to Kantrell Williams early in the second quarter. The PAT was blocked and the score was deadlocked at six.
Both teams traded field position for the remainder of the first half and they entered halftime tied at six.
Eastern wasted no time stretching their lead as Luckey again found paydirt at the 12:24 mark of the third quarter as he scampered in from 34 yards out. Carlos Encinas added the point after and EAC had a 13-6 lead.
Encinas added a 30 yard field goal and cornerback Brandon Stewart added six points of his own on a 50 yard interception return.
The vaunted Monster defense held the Bears to just 28 yards rushing on 27 attempts and intercepted the duo of Phoenix QB's twice in route to shutting them out in the second half.
Eastern (2-0) will be at home again Saturday September 9th at 2pm as they host College of the Sequoias from Visalia, California. The Giants are ranked #1 in the COA by JCGridiron.com. This game will be the first time a team from California will play out of the state since 1977.
The Eastern Arizona College football team defended their preseason ranking with an impressive 49-0 victory over the Prescott Cardinals, a semi pro team that plays in the Arizona Football League.
Sophomore tailback Lamont Downing starting the scoring early when he capped an eight play, sixty-eight yard drive with a 6 yard touchdown scamper with 10:35 left in the opening quarter. Carlos Encinas converted the PAT and EAC led 7-0.
Exactly two minutes later Freshman quarterback Pat Riley kept an option and went untouched in the endzone from 18 yards out. The Encinas kick gave Eastern the 14-0 lead. Dixie State transfer Cooper Blanc also found the endzone in the first quarter from 28 yards out with 4:10 remaining and the route was on with EAC up 20-0. They held that same lead headed into halftime.
The Prescott Cardinals had nothing to offer offensively as the daunted Monster defense held them to minus four yards of total offense in the first half.
The third quarter wasn't much hard for the Monster ground attack as they tallied three two more touchdown runs. A 42 yard sprint from quarterback Jawaun Luckey and Downing's second from 22 yards. EAC led 34-0 after the Encinas kick.
At 6:38 of the third quarter the defensive pressure finally produced some points as Devlin Bayne sacked the Cardinal quarterback in the endzone for a safety.
Eastern rested most of their offensive starters in the fourth quarter but still managed two more scores to stretch the lead to 49-0.
Eastern amassed 324 total yards, all of which came on the ground. Prescott was held to negative 16 yards of total offense.
Eastern (1-0) will host Phoenix College on Saturday at 6pm at Mickelson Stadium.
